Kale Yeah!
Name a trendier vegetable than kale. I mean, what other vegetable can you make puns out of and rep on a shirt??
Kale is my favorite leafy green and there’s so many reasons why it’s gotten so much popularity. I mean all hail kale, am I right?! Besides being crazy good for you (it’s high in calcium, fiber, potassium, vitamin C, basically all the good things), there’s so many different ways to enjoy it. Here are a few of my favorites!
1. Smoothies and Bowls
You can blend your kale with coconut water, lemon juice, mango, etc., or make it a little sweeter with some nut milk, bananas, berries, etc. It’s good tropical or sweet!
You can easily turn your smoothie into a bowl by just adding some toppings to it. Sorry, açai—you have some competition. I like to top mine with fruit, chia seeds, granola, goji berries, literally so many options.
2. Kale chips
Kale is so versatile that you can turn it into “chips.” You can do this at home by tearing the kale leaves into small pieces and baking them in the oven with olive oil and your choice of seasonings. You can also buy kale chips at plenty of grocery stores! This is one of my go-to snacks, but just watch out for it getting in your teeth haha.
3) Salads and Bowls
I love to massage my kale with olive oil, lemon juice, sea salt, and black pepper. And when I mean massage, I mean like literally massage that thing—rip off the stems and use your hands to knead the leaves for around 2-3 minutes. This makes the kale a lot smoother to eat and adds some extra flavor. You can turn it into a bowl by adding some healthy grains like quinoa, wild rice, or farro; your favorite source of protein like tofu, black beans or chickpeas; and even more veggies or fruits like bell peppers, asparagus, and sweet potatoes.
4. Juice
“Hi! I”ll get a 24 oz. juice with kale, spinach, apple, extra lemon, and extra ginger, no ice please”— me at every juice bar ever. I’ve definitely had some green juices that taste like dirt (sorry to those of you who love celery as your base), but trust me on this one. It’s s o g o o d . The extra lemon and extra ginger are key here! For those of you who don’t like kale, you won’t even know that you’re drinking it.
5. Spread the love!
My roommate Olivia and I got matching shirts just to show the world how much we love kale. But honestly, this shirt is so comfy and fun to wear! This is probably just a Berkeley thing, but I love seeing other people wearing kale shirts and sweaters. It’s always a nice reminder to be cognizant about what kinds of food we’re nourishing our bodies with. Can I get a kale yeah?!
