Kombucha?! Now that you mensch-ioned it...

I mean I wouldn't be your classic plant-based yogi without a little kombucha in my life!

I love trying out local kombucha brands when I’m home in OC, and Fermensch is my new favorite. I got to hang out with the owner Chad over a glass of pear kombucha and I asked him all about their brewing process, flavors, and the real question—what does Fermensch really mean?!

So is Fermensch just a twist on “ferment"?

Yes, kinda, sorta!

“Mensch” is Yiddish for “nice guy” and German (just for you, Nikki!) for “human being.”

Fermensch’s tagline “Be a Mensch to Your Gut” is all about being good to your body. The means to do this? With a little kombucha, of course!

Why on tap vs. in store?

Kombucha is fermented tea with lots of bacteria and yeast (appealing, I know) and because it’s fermented, I’ve always wondered if having it on tap makes a difference. And it does! It keeps it fresh and lets Fermensch cultivate that perfect level of carbonation.

Did someone say bloom?!

Okay, let’s be real. Fermensch has a “bloom” flavor and everyone knows how much I love focusing on growth. So I naturally fell in love with Fermensch before even trying it, but I can gladly say that this flavor is just as good as it sounds. If floral kombucha isn’t your thing, it’s all good—they rotate flavors seasonally and always have a variety on tap!

Where to fill up your growler

A growler is a glass bottle that you can use to fill up all your kombucha with (we love sustainability). You can find Fermensch at restaurants/cafes like Seabirds and Kit Coffee, but I would recommend getting a growler at the Irvine Farmer’s Market if you can! Chad and everyone else at Fermensch are so passionate about their kombucha and can answer all of your questions. Their goal is to make kombucha more accessible to everyone—not just a trendy yoga hippie thing—because it tastes good and it’s good for you. They’re the real mensch here!
